On the Record: Fruta Brutal’s ‘Deepest Ruins’

Denver indie Latin band Fruta Brutal, the brainchild of Martín Better Longo, has resurfaced with a new single after nearly a two-year hiatus.

‘Deepest Ruins’ reflects on a relationship past its prime and delves into that mystifying feeling — of returning to yourself, only to find how much you’ve changed.

While Better Longo explores the kind of perspective gained from grieving a loss and a renewed acceptance for the person he’s become, the song also illuminates the fluid nature of identity itself.

“There have been times where I’ve had to question whether or not the life I was building, and the people I was building it with, were truly right for everyone involved,” says Better Longo. “As I return my focus to Fruta Brutal, sharing ‘Deepest Ruins’ is my way of resurfacing for the first time in a long time.”

The song carries with it a brightness and effervescence — the glistening of guitar and shimmering of synth, like light on the water. Pop-forward and with lyrics completely in English, the single is a noticeable departure from some of the artist’s previous releases.

Fruta Brutal’s track record reminds us, though, that their repertoire is, in essence, eclectic.

The following text was contributed by the artist:

Artists from around the world contributed to ‘Deepest Ruins.’ The song was produced by Grammy-nominated New Orleans-based producer Mack Major, mixed by Danny Pauta of Neoma and The Mañanas, and mixed and mastered by Ecuadorian musician Agustin Rodas. Mack Major contributed drums and synth, with Robert Kellner and Ben Weirich adding synths to the track. The cover artwork was designed in collaboration with Joe Murray of Auberon Design.

Born in Ecuador and raised in the United States, Martín Better Longo blends his love for indie rock, pop, and Latin American music through his band, Fruta Brutal. Through over 9 years in the bustling music scenes of Denver, New Orleans, and South America, Longo gained exposure to various music styles, including Brazil’s Tropicália, which influenced his eclectic repertoire.
